Why am I having these extreme reactions?

If you suffer from anxiety it makes you feel constantly on edge. You spend a lot of time thinking about how situations will unfold and all of the possible scenarios that you could encounter. Often these imagined thoughts have little or no bearing on how things turn out, but just the idea of a potentially negative outcome can be enough to trigger those anxious feelings. If a particular time in the past felt uncomfortable, a part of you will be wanting to keep you from feeling that way again. Similar situations create similar feelings and your brain can even find similarities where none appear to exist and you start to feel irrational. 


When we're faced with something that makes us feel threatened, it triggers our 'fight or flight' instinct. This is a primitive response that has kept us safe from predators and prepares our body in readiness for exercise. This is a totally appropriate response if you are being faced with a hungry tiger, but if you just need to get out of bed and go to work, deliver that presentation, get through that exam, or get on that aeroplane, it is not helpful.
